Mark McCann has been with us for fifteen years and completed his City and Guilds training at the London and Metropolitan University in the summer of 2006.
Andrew Hughes came to us straight from school fourteen years ago and also successfully completed City and Guilds training at the London and Metropolitan University in cabinet making in the summer of 2006.
Both Andrew and Mark also completed NVQ level three in the early years of their employment with us.
Lori Winters came to work with us in 2005 initially to gain work experience and since 2007 has worked with us full time. Lori started her training at the Women's Education in Building at Surrey Quays and Ladbroke Grove and completed it at The College of North West London in 2005 prior to coming to work with us. Lori has also done a work placement at the Southwark Habitat for Humanity in Nunhead, South East London.
Each of the staff is lucky enough to live within walking or cycling distance of the workshop.
Peter Davies and his wife Ruth, chose to set up the business back in 1990 as a change from Peter's long career in Teaching and Ruth's in nursing and midwifery. Peter's inspiration for this work stems both from his experience as an apprentice cabinet maker, which he completed whilst working for GT Rackstraw, a reproduction furniture manufacturer based in his home town of Worcester, and his twelve years experience as a school teacher and college lecturer in London in teaching practical woodwork and metalwork skills, along with design, to young people. Peter also spent a happy two years teaching woodwork at a community school in Botswana in Southern Africa.
Premises | Equipment and how we work
The Workshop is located in the West of Forest Hill close to the Library and swimming pool. It is on a small tree lined, industrial estate which was built in the eighties next to the railway line. The estate has the luxury of ample parking spaces for visitors whilst still having enough room to allow access to big delivery vehicles.
The workshop is well equipped for the manufacture of kitchen furniture. Ongoing investment in new machinery has ensured that the company is able to stay ahead of current legislation relating to industrial safety whilst further improving our furniture manufacturing and finishing processes.
We have a spray finishing area which is light and well laid out. This enables a consistently high quality of finish to be produced in either lacquer or paint, depending on specification.
The Dovetail Joint has changed paint and lacquer finishing from solvent based to water based. This is because modern water based paints and lacquers have now been developed which can give the same high quality and hard wearing finish as solvent based whilst being much more environmentally friendly for both the users and the customers. There is no odour from these finishes which makes them very pleasant to work with and nicer to have installed in domestic houses.
How we work.......
The Dovetail Joint kitchen designers and craftsmen work as a team to combine style and individuality with traditional skills and painstaking attention to detail.
We believe in teamwork with the most important player being you. Your ideas and tastes give us inspiration to create a unique kitchen which is built to the highest standards of design and workmanship, specially for you. What is more, as a small company with minimum overheads, we can afford to price our kitchens competitively.
Whatever your choice - wooden or painted - contemporary or period - steel, granite or glass - The Dovetail Joint will design an original layout considering every aspect of space, light and function. We have no production line, our kitchens are hand made in our workshop by our craftsmen and guaranteed for five years.
When you buy a kitchen from the Dovetail Joint you get much more than an efficient work space. You get a room that is tailored to your lifestyle. It will be tough enough to withstand almost anything you can throw at it, yet still stylishly equipped for even the most ambitious cook.
The Dovetail Joint is a small family-run business that holds to the traditional values of high quality workmanship and value for money. As part of our full design service we take time with you, our client, and listen carefully to everything you say. We work with you to ensure each Dovetail Joint kitchen reflects your own personal style. We know that you will want to show it off. We realise how important it is to get every detail right in a kitchen that is going to last a lifetime.
The Dovetail Joint was opened in November 1990 by Peter Davies and Ruth Jenkins in a small, dark workshop along the South Circular in Forest Hill. Six years later, having outgrown the space, the business moved to the modern, purpose-built premises where they operate from today. Still in Forest Hill, our workshop is in a light and airy industrial unit which has ample space for the modern machinery and dust extraction that is required for this busy company.
In 1998 the partnership became incorporated as a Limited Company but it is still owned and run by Peter and Ruth, along with three other staff.
